4 Things To Do After Arriving In Australia

We all know the feeling when you get a call from consultancy advising that your visa is granted. That feeling is Out of The World. All our hard work from preparing English test to preparing the financial documents is finally paid off. But, suddenly you will start to have mixed feeling about your future in Australia. Although the Visa is granted, now you need to prepare for your travel to Australia and get ready to face the challenges that will come along. You are completely unaware of the life in Australia.Let me help you guide through the things to do after you arrive in Australia.

Before I start, I will assume that you have already used travel card(known as OPAL Card in Sydney) and visited the main icons of the city you have arrived. OPAL card is used as the ticket in public transport in Sydney, Australia ( MYKI in Melbourne), where you recharge your OPAL card before you travel and it will deduct money from your card as you travel. You can get OPAL card from various shopping centers (Woolworth and Seven Eleven Stores are the most popular ones). You can recharge the same OPAL card and use it when you travel.

You will be issued fine if you are found using public transport without valid ticket (OPAL card). FINE EXCEEDS $200

Now, lets start with the first 4 things to do after arriving in Australia.

1. Apply For TFN ( Tax File Number)

This is the first thing you need to do after arriving in Australia. As we all know that we will need to work to pay off the university fees and live in Australia. You will require a TFN to apply for Jobs in Australia. Employer will pay/deposit your tax amount in this TFN number. So, TFN is important and the first thing to do after you arrive in Australia. You will need to visit HERE and apply for TFN.

You will need to have a valid Australian residential address and your passport details to apply for TFN. So make sure you are using the correct address to apply TFN. After you apply for TFN, ATO(Australian Taxation Office will send your TFN in your address and you will receive it within 5 to 7 days.

ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR TAX FILE NUMBER SAFE AND PRIVATE. Only share your TFN with your employer.

2. Apply For Bank Account

After you have applied TFN, now its the time to apply for the Bank Account. Most of the transactions in Australia are through EFT( Electronic Fund Transfer) so having a bank is necessary. You will also require bank account to receive your salary/pay from your employer. Most IMPORTANT, you will need bank account to deposit the cash you have brought with you from Nepal.

For opening bank account, you will need to visit the nearest bank to open the account. Assuming most of new comers are student, apply for the student account as you will be waived of different fees. You will need to carry the following documents with you:
1. Passport
2. Certificate of Enrollment(COE)
3. Australian Visa
4. You will need a mobile number( You can use your friends/family number) IMP: MAKE SURE TO CHANGE IT WHEN YOU GET YOUR OWN MOBILE NUMBER.

Most of students use Commonwealth Bank as they are convenient and they have the most user friendly mobile applications to use. It is completely up to you to choose the bank.

3. Get a Mobile Number and Phone

We all dreamt of carrying the latest mobile phone in Nepal, now its your time to fulfill that dream in Australia. You can get the latest mobile phone in PLAN from various telecommunication companies.

What is MOBILE PLAN?
Mobile Plan is the way of paying the mobile phone in installment over certain period( which is 24 months in maximum cases).

You will need to carry the following documents with you.
1. Passport
2. Certificate Of Enrollment(COE)
3. Australian Visa
4. Bank Account Details ( To setup Direct Debit)
Direct Debit is the process to deduct the installment amount from your account in monthly basis.

DO NOT JUMP TO GET THE MOBILE, LOOK FOR DEALS AND DISCOUNTS IN THE MARKET BEFORE GETTING MOBILE PHONE ON PLAN.
We will write a detail about the mobile plan in our next blog.

4. Apply For PHOTO CARD

Photo Card is a state government issued card which can be used as for identity purpose. You will require 100 point of identification in Australia for various purposes. Passport and Photo Card will help you pass that 100 point of identification.

You will need to visit Service NSW (In NSW) to apply for Photo Card. You will need to carry the following documents with you.
1. Passport
2. Bank Account Details( Print the bank statement) which shows your current address
3. Bank Debit Card
4. Certificate of Enrollment and Visa ( Just in Case)
5. And you might need someone to verify your details, so take someone with you who has the Full Driving licence of Australia. (Alternatively, you can ask for help with the customer service representative, who will further advise you with favourable solutions.)
IT WILL COST YOU AUD$ 52 to apply for PHOTO CARD and it will be valid for 5 years

You will need to prove you are 18+ for many activities, for example : To buy a Beer (any alcoholic beverages), to buy a cigarette, to enter in a BAR or PUB. So carrying passport all the time might not be convenient and passport is sensitive document to loose. Hence, Photo Card will give you access to all of these places and you can keep passport in some safe place.

Hope you have the lovely future ahead in Australia.
